S-Type vs Disco: The Jag made the decision for me

Kinja'd!!!

Driving along last night in hunt of a mascot for the Great Oppo Hunt, which apparently we’re doing, the Jag’s ac suddenly cut out. Then started blowing hot.

When we stopped there was a pretty distinct “burning plastic” smell.

Typical.

I don’t know what is wrong with it and so far the internet has been unhelpful in the diagnosis.

I’ll take a look... eventually. Apparently there are a couple failures that can cascade (namely the heater control valve can take out the climate unit) so the Jag is out of commission until further notice. Current thinking is the heater control valve (which I need to check if I’ve replaced....) and/or the climate control unit went poof.  Neither really explains the external smell, but hell being that Jag that might be unrelated.

Then again I’ve never had AC go instantly like that (aside from when the low pressure sensor on the Volvo went) so I’m not really sure what to expect.

Unfortunately my usual trick of “ask Facebook” returned some pretty inane results. (No, I don’t think the compressor pulley seized. I feel like there would be other symptoms and also the air wouldn’t be HOT.)

I was considering taking it to an AC shop... but then I rolled down the driver’s side window and the tint came with it.

WTF.

Oh and the roofer showed up this morning at 6AM (I got 12 hours notice) and now both dogs have decided they’re too good to potty on a leash. Dog A will pee on anything that isn’t moving, but hasn’t pooped yet. Dog B finally gave up and pooped, but hasn’t peed. My back yard is full of debris, nails, and roofers so letting a timid Dog A or an overly excitable Dog B out is a no go. Also Dog B pretty much melted down when I took Dog A out for walks without him. Turns out dogs also get FOMO.

So yeah... back to the Jag.

I’m pissed.

And conflicted.

On one hand I really like this vehicle. It is lovely to drive and very comfortable.

On the other it feels like it is constantly kicking me and maybe my time and energy is best spent elsewhere.

Furthermore I like it, but I don’t love it. It is lovely to drive, but also despite being rather quick it doesn’t feel quick. Even though the slushbox is... fine... I resent it robbing me of control of that engine.

I dunno. I feel signs are pointing to ditching it and focusing on my core fleet. The Alfa’s engine work is going to be pretty all consuming and the Saab is always a problem child, so with those two I can’t (or won’t) really have time to deal with whatever nonsense the Jag decides to throw at me.

I think the plan might be finish the work that needs to be done and then put it on the market for too much money and see if it sells.

As for my upcoming trip... still conflicted.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

The Jag is out. I don’t have the time or energy to deal with bum AC and doing the shocks and EGR. Plus now the tint. I could pay to have everything but the EGR done but I’m pretty sure that won’t be money well spent.

The Land Rover is still... close to being ready. The new steering damper solved the vibration issue... but the noise is still there. I put the front end in the air and got no wiggle from anything so... Dunno. Reaching out on Facebook, expecting inane and/or incomplete answers. Might take it to a driveshaft specialist to make sure it isn’t that?

Anyway. Disco will get some love this weekend and is the likely candidate, but I also might put on my sensible pants and take the Volvo.

All in all... I’m pretty over today.

Ditch it. Use your time and enthusiasm on the core fleet

Not fun times.....I personally do not trust anything semi-modern and British, they just don’t seem to be worth it as people seem to have so much trouble with em :(

Well I personally would take the Disco, if it seems to be be trustworthy and you have faith in it, then it should see ya through the trip and home.

If you don’t... what do you have that wasn’t made by a company with questionable reliability?

Are considered Volvos reliable? Because otherwise...

Probably the worst car on Oppo, now that Sony offed his Mini. Dump it.

Harsh but perhaps not unfair.

Well has the Land Rover left you stranded ever? Seems like on a road tip that might have offroad possibilities the Discovery should be comfortable enough for a long trip (I’m going off my dads old Disco 2 and my own Range Rover Classics were nice and comfy for long trips, bar liking to visiting petrol stations somewhat regularly) and when you want to offroad a Discovery 2 is essentially a comfy and more ergonomic Defender, so seems like a good idea.

Volvos in my experience have been very dependable, my family haven’t had any issues with them and my mums had her T5 C30 going on 10 years, doesn’t feel like it’s worn at all. Then again my personal experience with Land Rovers has also been almost perfect bar my project V8, but that’s irrelevant. Basically pick what you want, it is your roadtrip, you’re gonna be the one at the wheel.

Wow that’s terrible news. I mean I just had my Jag in for a few little things and ended up dropping $2000 on new diff seals, rear brakes (inboard and extremely difficult on old Jags). Then when I picked it up the diff leaked like the Exxon Valdez and the mysterious intermittent   fuel leak still wasn’t found.

Good news though, my excellent Jag mechanic (Imports Unlimited) stood behind the work, took it back and fixed the axle seal again and found the fuel leak (easy) for free.

My 06 Land Cruiser is still possibly available to borrow. I’m hoping I will be getting my new vehicle this weekend, whatever it may be. (I have one vehicle I have had my eyes on for awhile .)

Take the Disco. For me, it shares much of the appeal of the Jag, if not the performance, but has a wider scope for adventure (that I know you like :).

Plus as other have said. Something Japanese and functional in the fleet gives you time and mental energy for dealing with the English (and other European) Patients...

I’ve looked at Jags so many times, but never hit the button as the nagging doubt that it will bring more pain than pleasure. Fine if it’s your only enthusiast car, but if that was the case I’d just get a Bentley Turbo R, and stop fucking around.

Oof. I think you just hit the nail on the head. Like... I like the Jag, but it is being more of a problem child than being the unloved middle child makes it worth. If I’m going to have to make it rain on a car, I might as well make it something I either care about, or something that is baller AF. This is neither.

Leaning Landy but we’ll see how this weekend’s wrenching goes. I want to drop the headliner to seal the roof rack at a minimum, but I have a couple other issues that need looked in to too. No deal breakers, mind you.

I got roped into the #oppohunt so my wrenching time is a little tight now.

Thanks for the offer!  I always have the Volvo as a fallback, so I’m happy.  I wouldn’t be comfortable taking someone elses rig for that long, or going overlanding in it.  One of the many (many) reasons I don’t use Turo too haha.

I’m just hoping you’d use it and fall in love and buy one, or mine even haha. I understand completely though, I’d love to see you overland the Volvo!
